Yanni Hufnagel is one of the country’s best assistant basketball coaches and is currently working with the University of Nevada. Yanni Hufnagel has earned a reputation for being a skilled recruiter and a driven coach. As a child he began learning plays, by reading books on coaching and then acting out those plays with sports figurines. When he became a teenager, he began calling games for his local public television station. Yanni Hufnagel’s analytical skill is proven through his lengthy coaching resume.
Yanni Hufnagel attended Cornell University and became their basketball manager. During the summer, Yanni Hufnagel was given an opportunity to intern with the NBA’s New Jersey Nets. Following the internship, the coaching staff connected him with Oklahoma’s head coach Jeff Capel, who was looking for a graduate assistant coach. Yanni Hufnagel flew to Oklahoma for an interview and was then offered the position.
Coach Jeff Capel recommended Yanni Hufnagel for the head coach position at Harvard. However, he ended up with a volunteer assistant coach position with Harvard. Once hired, he immediately took to the road, recruiting the best players across the country. At Harvard, he was seen as a rising star for his success at recruiting. Yanni Hufnagel is now able to have his choice of jobs, either as an assistant coach or head coach.
Yanni Hufnagel has worked with some of the elite basketball programs in the country, including: Cornell, Oklahoma, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Berkeley, and now Nevada. Yanni Hufnagel graduated from Cornell with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. While at Oklahoma, he earned his master’s degree in Adult Higher Education. While at Cal, he helped the team earn a No.4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He continues to help build up the program he is working at today. Yanni Hufnagel still enjoys the work he is doing.
